Discover These Four Grains During Whole Grains Month

James Bennett • Sep 22, 2021

Oldways Preservation Trust established Whole Grains Month in 2003 to promote the benefits of whole grains. Take time in September to learn more about the benefits of whole grains. As you and your parents home care aides do, try one of these grains with your parents and see what they think.

Benefits Gained by Eating More Whole Grains
Whole grains are packed with antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. B vitamins and vitamin E are two of the more prevalent nutrients in different whole grains. They help with cell health, and vitamins like B12 aid in the production of red blood cells.

Fiber is also found in whole grains. Fiber helps reduce the risk of constipation and colorectal cancer. It also lowers the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

Some of the Best Whole Grains to Try
What four whole grains should you enjoy during September’s Whole Grain Month? Try these with your mom and dad.

#1 – Bulgur

Whole wheat kernels can get chopped up, turning them into bulgur. Bulgur is a staple ingredient in dishes like tabbouleh. If you’ve never made tabbouleh, it’s easy.

Soak one cup of bulgur in a cup of hot vegetable stock. Allow the bulgur to soak up all of the stock and let it cool. Stir in the juice of two lemons and a half-cup olive oil. Once the oil and lemon juice have coated the bulgur grains, add five chopped tomatoes (seeds removed), three chopped scallions, one cup of chopped fresh parsley, and one cup of chopped mint leaves. Store in the refrigerator.

# 2– Farro

Farro is a type of wheat that has a chewy texture that’s similar to barley. It’s high in fiber and makes an excellent rice pilaf. You’ll also find it in some brands of semolina if you want to make farro pasta.

#3 – Freekeh

Freekeh is a type of wheat that is harvested while green and roasted. It’s the roasting of this grain that gives it a smokiness. Enjoy it in pilafs or salads. Freekeh can be cooked in a porridge that makes a great alternative to grits in a savory breakfast.

#4 – Teff

Teff is a variety of millet that comes in brown, red, or white. Thanks to its sweeter flavor, it’s often cooked as a porridge, but you can also use it in breads and muffins or as polenta.
